The Presidents Creel
Fellow members and hopefully new members, what will the new season hold for us after a long cold winter the first for a few years?
From my personal experience after long cold winters I have found the following seasons very productive. I find the fish especially brown trout appear to feed with little regard to safety i.e. they want to grab just about anything we offer them. Having checked back my old diaries, this definitely seems to be the case; maybe the fish and yourselves will prove me wrong I hope not!
I was fortunate last year to be invited to join some friends to fish LOCH WATTEN plus one or two lochs in CAITHNESS what a joy this long held ambition proved to be, great company plus really first class fishing for wild brown trout amid spectacular scenery, not to mention the thunder and lighting! All this took place in June, and later in August a fishing pal and myself Jeff went to Orkney for a week. I have fished the Orkney lochs over the years, for Jeff it was a first, the picture I had painted of fishing and life in Orkney did not disappoint him so much so we are going back this year, Jeff says it is a must for wild trout fishing. If you fancy it check out the Orkney Trout Fishing Association web site and the Kirkwall Hotel you wont be disappointed.
The association is still struggling on we really desperately require more members to continue. If any one reading this has any interest in joining, or has any ideas how we can move forward in a viable manner, please contact any of the office bearers as listed. The past season proved disappointing in numbers of members, but those who did join the "usual suspects " had some excellent sport at the various venues fished, with some notable catches in difficult conditions. For example the Strachans father and son both Ian at Loch Vennacher, Jeff Mowatt at Lake of Mentieth , we also had a memorable day at Midmar Fishery in October the day of the gales up to 100 mph, a wind turbine was blown over on the island where Arron Greig was fishing! but we still caught lots of fish.
So what of the new season will the salmon and sea trout return? Bill Taylor managed a small grilse off the Bervie, and Ian Strachan junior a fine 12lb Salmon off the Luther. This is encouraging but they will only be caught if we have members to fish for them. Once again don’t hesitate to connect us on the listed phone numbers if you have any queries we will do our best to help you.
Wishing you all a successful season in 2009
Tight Lines and heavy creels!
